What are Steve Troxler's plans for the next four years?
Steve Troxler wants to build on the success and service of the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and emphasize the following initiatives over the next four years:
-
Keep our food supply abundant
A healthy agricultural economy is a productive agricultural economy.
One NC farmer feeds 155 people globally. But, our farmers cannot continue doing that without being profitable. We will continue to open new markets for NC products, both domestic and international, support agricultural research at NCSU and NC A&T, advocate for sound farm policy in Raleigh and Washington, and support new and small farmers -
Keep our food supply safe
-
Healthy Forests and Conservation
-
Small Farmers and Local Markets
-
Resiliency
Ensuring consumers get a safe product from NC farmers is at the core of consumer protection at NCDA&CS. With the opening of a new laboratory for regulatory services, the Agricultural Sciences Center, we will be more capable than ever of ensuring a safe food supply. Food safety begins on the farm, is maintained through the supply chain, and takes a lot of partners working together. With farmers and federal agencies, NCDA&CS will enhance supply chain safety and traceability, protecting North Carolinians each and every day.
Steve Troxler majored in conservation with a concentration in environmental studies at NC State and has a lifelong commitment to natural resources. By continuing to assist landowners with good forest management, increasing access to forest management programs, promoting urban forestry concepts, and strengthening the Hemlock Restoration Initiative with permanent funding, these critical natural resources will be better conserved for future generations.
NC agriculture is incredibly diverse. Most farms are small and access local markets.
NCDA will enhance their opportunities through marketing assistance, increasing farm to school deliveries, and assisting small, limited resource, and minority farmers to access state and federal programs. One example is Troxler's strong support of using COVID-19 relief funding to help small farmers market and remain viable in the pandemic.
NCDA&CS plays a key role in making NC more resilient to catastrophic weather events. Commissioner Troxler will continue to support programs like stream debris removal and watershed recovery led by the Soil and Water Conservation Division with federal partners like USDA well-funded and effective.
